Finally, the Summer has arrived and we have been able to take learning outside more this week. As usual, we have been very busy in school and the children have been enjoying their learning. Next week our year 6 pupils will sit their SATS exams. These statutory assessments establish whether pupils are Secondary ready and are the first time pupils sit formal assessments. The children have worked tirelessly and we wish them all the very best of luck.

WHAT IS WHITEROSE MATHS?

At Abbeys we are working hard to embed the Whiterose maths curriculum and the Mastery approach.

The Whiterose curriculum, known for its innovative approach to teaching mathematics, offers several benefits:

Conceptual Understanding: Whiterose focuses on deepening students' understanding of mathematical concepts rather than rote memorisation. This approach helps students grasp the "why" behind mathematical principles, fostering a more profound comprehension that supports problem-solving skills.

Coherent Progression: The curriculum is carefully structured to ensure a logical progression of concepts. Each topic builds upon previous learning, providing a coherent pathway for students to follow as they advance through the curriculum.

Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) Approach: Whiterose utilises the CPA approach, which involves introducing concepts using concrete manipulatives, then representing them pictorially before moving to abstract symbolic representations. This approach caters for all learning styles and helps students develop a solid foundation in mathematics.

Emphasis on Fluency and Reasoning: In addition to mastering mathematical procedures, Whiterose emphasises the development of fluency in calculations and the ability to reason mathematically. Students are encouraged to explain their thinking and justify their solutions, fostering critical thinking skills.

Rich Problem-Solving Tasks: The curriculum includes a variety of rich problem-solving tasks that require students to apply their mathematical knowledge in real-world contexts. These tasks promote creativity, resilience, and the ability to transfer mathematical skills to new situations.

Teacher Support and Resources: Whiterose provides support and resources for teachers, including detailed lesson plans, instructional videos, and assessment materials. This support enables teachers to effectively implement the curriculum and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners.

Even though we teach maths differently now to how we all may have learnt when we were at school there is a lot that you can do to support your children at home!

SHOUT OUT TO MISSENDEN-I have been really impressed with their hard work when learning about decimals. They are totally smashing it and confidently using their previously learnt knowledge of fractions to help them order decimals, complete calculations using decimals and convert between fractions and decimals.

Whitby Maths class have been learning about multiplication and division. They learnt how to create an array and count in groups of 2, 5 and 10 to multiply. They used practical resources to divide by grouping and sharing with a partner.

In science, Missenden have been learning how to keep their teeth healthy. They have produced these fantastic information leaflets to explain all about teeth!

Well done Missenden!

Fabulous Foundation stage have been learning all about Space. The children have been using the plasticine to create rockets, aliens and astronauts and put them onto space images. They've also enjoyed dressing up as astronauts too.

Mrs Clarke would like to celebrate the progress in handwriting that her class have made. The children have worked really hard to improve their handwriting and are beginning to join their writing correctly. Here are some photos of Candice and David’s handwriting books.

Woburn class have been learning all about Sinking and Floating! They have been enjoying making predictions about whether objects will sink or float, and testing their theories. They have been writing stories with watery themes!

The children in year 5/6 have been learning all about the water cycle. They had to use materials to recreate each stage of the cycle. Here is Sean's work at design stage! I cannot wait to see the finished product! Well done Sean!

Last week Mr Godfrey and Mrs Dunnett took out year 5 Sports leaders for their first training session at the Radcliffe school. They have started to learn how to be leaders and work with others to promote exercise. This is just the start of their journey.... they did amazingly well for their first session.

A huge congratulations to Iosua!

Iosua has received his Grade 1 guitar exam results.

He got a Distinction!

He has an awesome habit of scoring a hat-trick in every match and his coach is so happy and impressed with him !

Well done Harvey and with a breakfast like this no wonder you have so much energy!

Congratulations Mr Walton on your first 'Mugging' and thank you for being you!!

When I was younger I was a huge fan of Rollers in Bletchley and it is great to see roller-skating making a come back!

Miss Bemrose and I will be leading the float and hope to win back our first place position from Rickley!

The more the merrier!

  • As the weather is getting warmer please ensure your child is well-prepared for school. Sun cream [applied at home], sun hats and sensible shoes.
  • Crocs, Flip flops, heels or backless sandals are not appropriate. The staff do not wear these shoes either- as they are not safe when moving around school.
  • Payments- the office team are spending a lot of time chasing Parents/ carers for payments for after-school clubs and trips. If you book spaces in wrap club or breakfast club these need to be paid for in advance.
