Another week down!

I am pleased to share with you that over 90% of our year 1 pupils achieved the expected standard in their recent phonics assessment.  As a school, we have significantly invested in early reading and RWI and this investment and all the hard work of the teachers and pupils has really paid off.

Well done everyone!

Next week, year 2 pupils will be taking their KS1 assessments. Whilst these are no longer statutory, they are a good measure of where children are currently at and this will help us to identify gaps in learning as pupils move into year 3.

Good luck to year 2.

End of year plans

We do need to have some flexibility around our end of year plans for numerous reasons. When Ofsted do finally decide to visit Abbeys, we want to show them the very best practice and show them how wonderful our school is. Therefore, we cannot take our foot off the pedal too early! When we get the call, some plans may have to change and some events be rearranged. We will notify you as soon as we possibly can of any changes.

To help us, please keep on top of any communication from school. Be sure to check your emails and text messages.

If you haven't completed your Parent view- Ofsted survey please register- https://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk/register

Thanks again for your continued support.

OUT AND ABOUT IN CLASS

As usual, I have been out and about in classes seeing what has been going on!

This week, Melrose Maths group have been locating right angles in their environment. They really enjoyed the practical lesson and using the angle measurers.

Congratulations once again to our pupils in Foundation Stage!  What a fantastic assembly on Wednesday. You all did amazingly well to present like that in front of the whole school. It was lovely to see how far you have come this year.

This week Foundation have been enjoying an ice cream shop role play that links with their topic "Oh I do like to be beside the seaside".

Edson has been sharing his recent Karate trophy with the class and has been teaching children some moves during choosing time.

The children have been using Ipads and Google Earth to explore beaches and the seaside. Foundation Stage do you ever stop for a rest?

Whitby have been re-writing the story of Handa's suprise and these are some of the story openings they came up with to describe the character and the setting. Congratulations to Logan and Evie for their fantastic work!

Belmont class have been learning all about friction on the slip and slide in forest school. They had a lovely time, even though they got a little wet!

Please remember all children need wellies and waterproofs- otherwise they will get wet and very mucky!

Well done to Lexi [above] for decorating these lovely stones and making a snake- what a lovely garden decoration. Very artistic!

Also a huge congratulations to Neave who achieved level 4 in gymnastics last week and Orlah who achieved level 2. Well done girls! I bet your parents have to put away all the breakables at home!

Congratulations to Kayden and Brodie who deserve a shout-out for being amazing ring bearers at their Dad’s wedding over the half-term.

They did a fantastic job and made everyone very proud with how well they coped with the excitement of the day!

You look very very smart boys!

CONGRATULATIONS to Tyler!

Tyler received 2 merits for her roller skating!

Well Done! Reminds me of my Roller days, when I was younger!

This week's mugging goes to Ms Chamberlain. Mr Walton wanted to take this opportunity to thank Ms Chamberlain for being such a fantastic colleague and for stepping up while he was off. Ms Chamberlain's seamless handling of additional responsibilities and her willingness to support the team have been truly impressive. The way she has managed tasks and maintained our schools' high standards is exemplary. And she always has a smile on her face!

Thank you so much to everyone that sold raffle tickets and donated prizes and cakes for the Summer Fair later today! I hope you will all attend!

I promise Mr Godfrey will be in the stocks again!

See you this afternoon between 3.30pm and 5pm

Congratulations to Chiamaka, her poster design caught my eye! Well done to everyone that entered the competition!

WHAT IS THE SUMMER SLIDE AND HOW TO PREVENT IT?

Preventing the summer slide, where students lose some of the academic gains made during the school year over the summer break, involves a combination of structured activities, learning opportunities, and fun engagement.

Here are several strategies parents can use:

Encourage Reading

  1. Library Visits: Regular trips to the library can keep children excited about reading. Many libraries have summer reading programs with incentives.
  2. Reading Time: Set aside a specific time each day for reading. Let children choose books that interest them.
  3. Reading Challenges: Create a reading challenge with a reward system for meeting reading goals.

Engage in Educational Activities

  1. Educational Apps and Games: Utilise educational apps and online games that make learning fun- use TTROCKSTARS!
  2. Board Games and Puzzles: These can improve critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  3. Science Experiments: Simple at-home science experiments can keep kids curious and engaged.

Practice Maths Skills

  1. Math Workbooks: Use -age-appropriate workbooks to practice maths skills.
  2. Daily Math Practice: Incorporate maths into daily activities, like cooking (measuring ingredients) or shopping (calculating totals and change).
  3. Maths Games: Play maths games, such as card games or online maths challenges.

Writing Opportunities

  1. Journaling: Encourage children to keep a daily journal about their summer activities.
  2. Creative Writing: Have them write stories, poems, or even scripts for plays.
  3. Letters and Emails: Encourage writing letters or emails to family members or friends. If you go away, they could send a postcard home!

Promote Physical Activity

  1. Sports and Outdoor Play: Encourage regular physical activity to promote overall well-being.
  2. Educational Outings: Visits to museums, zoos, and parks.

Incorporate Learning into Daily Life

  1. Cooking: Teach kids about measurements, fractions, and following directions through cooking.
  2. Gardening: Lessons in science, responsibility, and patience can be learnt through gardening.
  3. Travel and Exploration: Even local trips can provide learning opportunities about geography, history, and culture.

Foster a Positive Learning Environment

  1. Set Goals: Help children set and achieve academic goals for the summer.
  2. Stay Organised: Create a schedule that balances learning with relaxation and fun activities.
  3. Be a Role Model: Show enthusiasm for learning by engaging in educational activities yourself.

By blending educational activities with fun and relaxation, parents can help prevent the summer slide and keep their children academically engaged during the summer holidays. Regular revision or prior learning will put your child in a better position when they return to school in September.
