We have had a wonderful couple of weeks in school. Particular highlights have been the STEM science workshops, organised by Mrs Sadia. and of course our baby chicks hatching in Foundation Stage. We have been creating awe and wonder throughout the school!

Children and staff in Tintern and Turvey have loved watching the hatching of our chicks this week. We can't wait until we can hold them next week before they return to grow up on the farm.

Our science leader, Mrs Sadia has been very busy organising special events for the children to enjoy. This week we have taken part in visiting workshops that link to our topics.

EYFS – Safari STEAM Adventures
Our youngest learners investigated different animal habitats, looked closely at animal tracks, and experimented with absorption through patterned “giraffe skin” art activities.

Key Stage 1 – Floating and Sinking
KS1 children became mini-scientists as they explored the properties of materials. They carried out hands-on investigations to find out which objects float, which sink, and why.

Key Stage 2 – Engineering and Simple Machines
KS2 pupils became engineers for the day. They learnt about engineering in the real world and discovered six simple machines. Children also had the chance to investigate some of these mechanisms first-hand.

Melrose class have been very busy over the last few days.

During Forest School, the children enjoyed bird watching and used Mrs Dunnett’s new bird callers to communicate. Some children also independently created connecting streams to direct puddles away from the kitchen and tent area. This activity required a wide range of teamwork and communication skills.

In computing, the class have been exploring the use of spreadsheets. They learnt how to enter a range of data into cells and calculate prices, showing great focus and problem-solving skills.

COMMUNITY IFTAR

Religion plays an important role in shaping culture, traditions, and values. Learning about different faiths helps build understanding, respect, and tolerance. At Abbeys, we celebrate diversity and are proud to host an Iftar in partnership with our Muslim community- it will be on Wednesday 4th March  between 5.30pm-7.30pm.

Iftar marks the breaking of the fast during Ramadan, the Islamic holy month. It is a time of gratitude, community, compassion, self-discipline, and spiritual reflection. This inclusive event is open to all families and supports our commitment to building a respectful, compassionate, and harmonious community.

The event is free to attend. We kindly ask attendees to bring a dish to share.

What’s on the menu?
Iftar typically features halal food such as dates, soups (like lentils or harira), appetisers (samosas, pakoras, falafel), main dishes (kebabs, biryani, couscous, tagines), salads and sides, refreshing drinks, and traditional desserts like baklava and kunafa.

We’ll also include elements of an Eid-style celebration—so please dress to impress! If you have ideas or suggestions, feel free to email me directly.

This will be our third Iftar, and it was my favourite event last year. We hope it becomes a lasting Abbeys tradition that brings our community together.

We are also looking for a small team to help coordinate the event. If you’re able to help please email me.
